In the book "The 13 1/2 lives of Captain Bluebear a novel" by Walter Moers, it tells the story of a bear's first 13 lives. I am still in the beginning of the book, but it turns out to be a very interesting book! I am on page 113. Throughout what I have read so far, I noticed there are some morals and lessons that are said in this humor-based book.
For example, in the fourth year of Captain Bluebear's life, (My life on Gourmet Island) it tells how he comes aboard to an island that is filled with "free" delicious treats and every single savoring food you can think of. Bluebear first spends the day having three meals, but over time he started eating more and more, and whenever Bluebear got tired of one food, another one would appear out of nowhere. He could drink the stream, eat flowers that tasted like cinnamon, etc. Bluebear got very fat! One day however, a bad stench appeared and the island started cracking, the trees and flowers withered, and his paradise was turning into hell. Then came a creature called a "Pterodactlyus Salvator" came and rescued him. This bird told him, "Let this be a lesson to you, nothing in life is free, not even the food you eat." That is a piece of advice to the readers also. It's a very was adage, and left me wandering on this subject of free.
Also, later in the book when Bluebear and the Pterodactlyus Salvator (A.k.a Mac) are exploring together, and Bluebear becomes a navigator for Mac's aging eyes, there is another lesson. Mac is a "bird" species that save creatures (mostly humans) from death at the last possible second. One particular day Bluebear and Mac were watching a man who was jumping off a cliff. When they rescued him, and Mac asked him what he had been thinking, the man replied: "I just wanted to see how good you Roving Reptilian Rescuers really are." This shows how people can be very deceiving, and sometimes do things for their own amusement. I thought this was really clever, and hope that the author purposely meant to incorporate a lesson into this humor-based book.
So far, I absolutely love this book! I think it is hilarious, and I love reading between the lines, and finding out little pieces of advice that is said through this funny story! I can only wish for the book to get even more interesting!
