Matched Reading Response

I am currently reading the book Matched by Ally Condie. I have already read this book around 2-3 times, and I still get excited when the suspenseful parts come up. It is about a world in the future, where it is apparently a perfect world (Utopia.) This Utopia is where people live in peace run by society. Everyone dies at 80, there are 100 songs, 100 poems, and 100 books. The society (government) got rid of all the other songs, poems, and books because they believe the world was too cluttered. There is no crime, and it is essentially a perfect life. Then there is a Banquet where on your 14th year, you are matched with your lover. (You can also choose to be Single forever if you wish.) Cassie who just turned 14 has the Matching Banquet in the beginning of the book. Usually they are matched with people from different cities, and no nothing of them. However, Cassie had a very extraordinary case where her Match turned out to be her childhood friend, Xander! When they received their information cards about each other, Cassie finds out something very mysterious. When she viewed the card at home, a face suddenly appeared after Xander. Cassie got scared and didn't tell anyone. However a few days later a Patrol Officer came up to Cassie and explained that someone had probably played a very evil prank on her because of the other guy's position. Cassie knew this other face that appeared on the port screen when she was looking at Xander's profile. It was Ky, a newly transferred kid into Cassie's city. The Officer told Cassie that he was an Abberation, which meant a position lower then Cassie's position, which was a regular citizen. Although Ky was not dangerous, like an Anmoly, his father committed a serious crime, and therefore put Ky into the Abberation position. Over the course of the book, Cassie begins to question if Ky was really meant to be her match and faces some hardships.
I think it is very interesting how these people who are living in this so called "perfect" world can be so oblivious to some things. Are they really that easy to manipulate, and do they have any say in what the Society chooses to make their laws and rules? When I first read about how everyone died at 80, I was sort of suspicious. How is it possible for every single person to die at the exact same date, the day they turn 80? Every person would have to look identical in every single way. Of course, that is not how it is. So basically on science, I was skeptical about this. Then, when I found out that the reason that the elders cannot share their foods with visitors on the last few days before the goodbye ceremony is because the Society puts a drug where the body slowly shuts down just in time when they turn 80 and go to sleep forever. This got me outraged! What a total lie of the fact that there hasn't been a murder in 100 years. The Society, the leaders of this last standing nation is killing people every day! Choosing when their life ends is morally wrong. Everyone is their own person, and have their own mind. A perfect world can never really exist. There is always going to be some cracks and dirty secrets that make it not so perfect.
Another thing that got me so outraged at the Society is that they punish the Abberations by putting them in the work positions that slowly kill them with the toxic gas and the burns on their hands. What did the abberations do?! It's not their fault their parent committed a crime. I thought that was totally unfair and felt so bad for Ky. Especially for the such good-hearted guy he is. Without wanting to cause trouble for anyone, he quickly slips in and out without making much of a difference in anything. He blends in with the crowd, not making  himself known. Where is the moral rights in all of this?!
In conclusion, I would be very angered if our world ever became so morally wrong like this. Who gives the Society the right to choose how everyone lives their life? I'd rather live an adventurous and full short life, then live a long and healthy, but boring life.

  1. Your post was so detailed it makes me want to read matched. I agree with the fact that even perfect worlds aren't so perfect. If something like this were to happen to our world today, what do you think would have caused the government to make such dramatic changes to our society?

  2. Well In the book Matched, they showed how the one city standing went to total war with the rest of the world. I think it is that someone had been trusted with too much power, and therefore created this perfect-like world on the outside, but a dirty world on the inside
