ROOM- Reading Response

In the book Room by Emma Donohuge is absolutely amazing. When I first picked it up, I couldn't put it down and finished it the first night! In this book, there is a woman who lives with her soon to be 5 year old son. She is held prisoner in a room and was held for 7 years. Jack the son was born in this room, and thinks of it as his home. Ma however hates this place and wishes to leave. Old Nick is the guy that kidnapped Ma when she was 17 years old and held her in this room that is foolproof so she couldn't escape. Jack doesn't understand why Ma doesn't like this place but he loves her very much and is basically the only person he talked to his whole life. He thinks that trees, cars, and such are all in his TV and are not real life. Because as you can see he has never gone outside. In the book the author writes in the 5 year old's view. It explains the way he thinks and how he calls everything with an important name such as Table, or Bed. Jack doesn't call the bed the bed, he calls the bed Bed. (That's sort of confusing). So one day, Ma and Jack think up a plan to escape and Jack has to pretend he's dead and escape when Old Nick is driving because he would leave Jack in the back of his pick-up truck. Jack is very scared and it tells the true feelings in this book. He had a little accident and it made me so scared because it is so realistic! I love the way this author wrote this book.

This made me think about all the crime in the world. Everyday there are thousands of people who are kidnapped, killed, abused and more. There is so much bad stuff in this world I would break my hand trying to write a list of all of them. However, something that Ma says during an interview when she escaped really got me thinking. The interviewer said, "It must have been tragic to have gone through all of that." (Not exact quote) And she said " Well, other people stories that I've read have gone through much worse than me. " (Also not exact quote). This really got me thinking. People around me complain a lot, because we are teenagers. But I always like to think about what I say. Sometimes one of my friends might go, "OMG, It's so cold outside it's basically the worst day of my life." I know it's sort of an exaggeration, but it really irritates me. I just want to shout to them. there are PLENTY of people who has it worse than you. I even use this joke "First world problems" meaning that these are problems that first world countries complain about whilst third world countries face starvation and sickness.

I think that it was really clever the way the author didn't stop the book right after Ma and Jack escaped. Because it's not a truly happy ending. Jack has NEVER been outside. There will be more adventure and everything. I highly suggest people to read this book. It. Is. AMAZING. I tell you AMAZING!

  1. Hey Yaejin! :D

I really love your post about "ROOM". I agree, ROOM is the best book ever, and I'm glad you let me read it :)! I like how you made connections with the book, and how you backed up your statements. It is a good thing the author didn't the book right when Ma and Jack escaped. I have one question; What would your thoughts be about the book if the author had ended the book right when they had escaped?

    Sincerely, Jennifer :P

    1. Hi Jennifer!

Thank you for commenting and reading my blog post! And I would've been a bit dissappointed because there is so much more of the story than just escaping. Everything is not perfect after they escaped.
