The Miseducation of Cameron Post Reading Response Fri: April 11. 2013
The book " The Miseducation of Cameron Post" by Emily M. Danforth is really good. It is about a girl named Cameron Post who first kissed a girl when she was 12 years old. Her best friend Irene Klauson and Cameron Post were very competitive against each other and when Irene dared Cameron to kiss her, it was a totally different experience than expected. Cameron liked the kiss and wanted to do it again. But then several hours later when Cameron is sleeping over at Irene's house, she receives the message that her parents passed away unexpectedly in a car crash. First Cameron feels relieved, then shocked that she felt this. After that, Cameron moves in with her very uptight and conservative aunt and holes up in her room watching R rated movies all day. She becomes distant with the world. Then Cameron meets a girl from Montana who was very outspoken about Gay Pride. They kiss a lot, and the girl Lindsey gets mad at Cameron for not accepting herself as gay. Then the book skips to freshmen year where Cameron sees Irene again who is now going to a private school and don't talk anymore with Cameron. This is where I am up to.
I think that gay is a very controversial topic. It is also very biased with many different opinions in all sorts of religions. Cameron's aunt Ruth is a anti gay person and takes Cameron to sermons about how gay is a sin and that laying with someone of the same sex is not allowed. Cameron takes this very harshly because she believes that her parents died due to the fact that Cameron had kissed another girl. Mind you, she received the message that her parents passed away only mere hours after she had kissed Irene.
I have always been pro for same sex love but never really thought about it. I always thought that people can love whoever they wish, and it doesn't affect me in any way whatsoever. It is their business and I believe that people have the right to do whatever they believe or whatever they want. Reading this book about a 12 year old girl discovering that she likes girls for the first time was very shocking and interesting for me. I never thought really deeply about this topic. I've always read and watched videos and articles about people who killed themselves or are broken beyond repair because they were shunned for liking the same sex. This book has really brought me to reality and got me thinking about all the harsh treatment people who like the same sex get.
I think it isn't right for people to bully others for liking the same sex. They can't help who they feel attracted. It's not like we choose who we fall in love with. They are no different. I also hate it when they treat gays like they are some other race or species. Gay people are also humans and have the same rights as us. It is not like they are doing anything to hurt us and some people need to keep their noses in their own businesses.
