In the book there is a girl named Meggie who lives with her dad. He is a book binder, or a "book doctor" as 12 year old Meggie likes to call it. Her mother dissapeared according to his Father (a.k.a Mo). One day a strange fellow meets Mo who is called Dustfinger. This Dustfinger tries to lead them toward an evil person so they may be captured for one thing. A book.
As Mo runs to his wifes aunts house named Elinor, he tells Meggie it is just for a book binding job. She believes him, but wonders why Mo is hiding a book so sacredly and wrapping it up. She also wonders why Elinor is hiding it in her humoungous library. Suddenly three men in black suits take Mo and the book with them. They call Mo Silvertounge. As Mo tells Meggie later in the story when they are both captured in the cell , he explains that he read the evil man Capricorn and his men , such as Basta , and Dustfinger. Capricorn didnt want to go back in to the story, so he is out to burn every last book so he can rule his kingdom forever. Dustfinger on the other hand wants to go back and Capricor lied to him that if he brought Mo and the book back, he would be read into the story again.
As i am through the middle of the book, I have pondered on the question. Who is considered evil in this book? Of course Capricorn is evil, after all he enjoys killing people. But a lot of people seem to think Dustfinger is evil. I strongly disagree with this. Even though he betrayed Mo and Meggie and Elinor, he did it because he hated living in the world he was forced into 9 years ago. If you suddenly appeared in a huge loud bustlinf city , you would be scared to death. Especially since the book Dustfinger was in (Inkheart) was in a peaceful (well most of it) setting. I do not fault Dustfinger for his betrayal. He was stripped of his life. Like they say, "You can't truly know what someone has gone through without going through it yourself". I have read this book a couple of times and it is amazing. Dustfinger is probably my favorite character. I can't wait to reread the scary ending of this book!!
