The People of Sparks Reading Response June 9, 2013

I just finished the book "The People of Sparks" by Jeanne Duprau. It is a sequel of The City of Ember. In the first book, a city has lived underground for hundreds of years, and the food is slowly running out. These two kids Doon and Lina, find a note from a long time ago that states if ever needed to, how to get up to the above ground in case the city collapses. That was the first book. However, the second book s the story of when Doon and Lina manage to bring 400 people from the city of Ember and find a world of light and color and plants. They find a village called Sparks which the people within agree to take them in for a while so they can learn about the world. While the underground folk has survived on electricity for their whole lives, the Sparks villagers depend on the sun and the moon. However, troubles and fights start to arise against the people of Sparks and Ember. They blame each other and the people of Sparks feel reluctant to share their food.

What I thought was interesting was the fact that they could live underground. Apparently there was a Disaster hundreds of years ago, and most of humankind were wiped out. But a number of people managed to build a working city underground. Is this actually possible? Wouldn't we die without the sunlight? But applying what I know from Science is that Evolution can play a role. I figure that the descendants of the original inhabitants of the underground city are better suited to having no natural sunlight than the original people. It is amazing how a species if separated into different environments can act so differently.'

In conclusion, I thought the these two books were a nice, fresh original idea. I read the first book back in 3rd grade, and loved it. I am thinking of picking up the third and final book soon. I suggest people to read this series because it is not a typical book!
