Non-fiction Reading Response

In the book "Radical Robots- Can You be Replaced?" by George Harrar, it talks about the future of robots. George talks about how Robots may not be as intelligent as us, but it is "reproducing" faster and more smart. They not only can go to Mars, and planets in the Universe that we people cannot venture to, Robots can also cook, clean, teach, mow, and garden. They do jobs that are too dangerous or even bothersome for us people to do. Most robots are simple, designed to do assembly-line work. They can go for 24 hours a day and never get tired.
It also tells us how building a robot is more complicated then it looks. Making a robot take out the trash may seem like an easy task, but there could be a skateboard or some kind of obstacle in the way that could ruin everything. Unlike humans, robots only do what they are programmed to do. "Radical Robots" says that the C3P0 from Star Wars is not a robot, and instead a live actor. Not robot can match the intelligence of C3P0. Our human body has evolved into a very distinct way that allows us to do many things that robots cannot do today. What a robot might find easy, we find hard, and what we find easy, robots find hard. Robots and humans seem to need each other.
Even though the fact that robots can memorize the whole encyclopedia in less then a second, it doesn't necessarily mean it is smart. They can never think of anything new. Robots cannot learn through experiences and memories like we humans do. Also, homophones are a problem. Understanding human speech causes a lot of complications by a computer. Sayings can confuse a robot like "Let's kill two birds with one stone." They would take it literally. People tend to assume that a robot will work flawlessly. If they hit a wall once in 500 times, they would say the robot had failed. But people bump into walls all the time. Nobody calls them a failure.
The author George Harrar wants us to feel hesitant and curious about the topic of robots. He is making us decide whether robots are useful or not. He wants us to know that no matter how much robots advance, they could never reach a level of a human. He wants us to think glad that no other species or anything can match to our complicated race. But George also wants us to think about if it is really necessary for robots to do our simple household chores.

  1. This is good, but when you discuss what the author wants us to think or feel, point out some craft moves he makes to get the reader thinking that way!

  2. This is really good! What is your say on robots in the future? Do you think Georges opinion is correct?
