Uglies reading response- Text to World.

       In the book Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, there is a main character named Tally and she is about to turn 16 years old. When you turn 16 in this world, you go through a procedure to make yourself "Pretty" as people in this country call it. Before you are 16 however, you are referred as an "Uglie."As the story goes on, Tally finds a friend who doesn't want to be turned pretty. She finds this shocking, because who wouldn't want to be pretty? This girl's name is Shay, and she ends up running away from the city into a secret city called "The Smoke". Tally however, ended up staying and turning pretty. However, the "Special Circumstances" found out and put Tally under a tight spot. They told her that she could not turn pretty unless she found her friend and took her back to the city. Tally really wanted to turn pretty because she believed her eyes were too wide, her nose was too big, and her hair was too frizzy. So, Tally goes on an adventure with a note that Shay left behind encrypted in a secret code. Throughout this book, I have noticed how the problems in the book related to problems in real life.
     One way problems in the book relate to problems in real life is that the fact about how everyone wants to be pretty. In this world, we are compared by celebrities models to be beautiful. We are looked down if we are not pretty and looked up to if we are prettier than the average person. It shows how much people will go through just to look as pretty as other people. Going through a major surgery for 4 weeks just to become beautiful and knowing that your skin will be ripped off and set a new , fake skin on. We will do anything today to become pretty. We go through plastic surgery, which is sort of like this, but less extreme. However, in the future, it could become more extreme up to this point.
    Another thing is, it is not completely safe. Some people have died in today's plastic surgeries AND the book's major plastic surgery. Knowing the risk that your body could be demented forever, but still going through with it shows how much people want to be pretty.
